Mary is a waitress employed by Grace Emberly at her establishment in Fort James, Hudson Bay, where she spends her days serving patrons and helping around the alehouse. But when not working with customers, Mary is involved in many schemes concocted by Grace, to which she becomes something of a right hand for the latter.

Throughout the events surrounding Hudson Bay Company 's (HBC) campaign to pacify Declan Harp, Mary is nothing but a bystander to which she does nothing more but to aid Grace Emberly run her business. However, Grace puts a great deal of trust in Mary as she herself not only is involved in some of the schemes involving HBC, Mary herself is aware of Grace's relations with Harp and his posse, to which she herself is quite familiar with and has no issue providing assistance to.

Mary, however, would find herself in amidst of a hostile rivalry between her and Imogen, a prostitute Grace was coerced into hiring, as she is will aware that Imogen is an HBC spy working along with the upper echelon of its administration at Hudson Bay. Along with this mistrust, Mary is repulsed by Imogen's history as a prostitute and frequently derides her for pleasuring men. The pair's hostilities eventually boil over when Grace is forced to leave Fort James in search of her father's possessions, after which then Governor Jonathan Chesterfield had placed the alehouse under the garrison's quartermaster's control, to which Mary would be harassed repeatedly by HBC soldiers. Imogen would unofficially replace Grace and would attempt to run the business under her guidance but not without turning the alehouse into a whorehouse, a decision that greatly incensed Mary especially after it was revealed that Imogen had both inadvertantly brought in underaged native women as well as native women sold to the house by a trader and human trafficker named Patrick O'Reilly. Angry with Imogen's decisions, she would eventually murder one of the pedophilic patrons attempting to rape a worker and would work with Sokanon to rescue the kidnapped women, only to be kidnapped herself by O'Reily and to be held captive at a undisclosed Christian monastery where native women are converted against their will and are turned into "country wives" or wives forced into marriage to European men. With Sokanon's help, Mary would free the women and would eventually return to Fort James, which would later be under the control of Harp's Black Wolf company, and would, with the help of Michael SmythMalcolm Brown and Cobbs Pond, evict Imogen out of the alehouse and Fort James for good.
